At first glance, The Strenuous Life celebrates enduring symbols of the American wild. Look closer, and another story begins to emerge. Woven throughout the drawings are hidden references to the life, adventures, and legacy of Theodore Roosevelt. The work also reaches beyond Roosevelt’s lifetime. Symbols representing the Living Building Challenge connect his conservation legacy to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and its commitment to creating a building that works with nature rather than against it. Some elements reveal themselves immediately. Others reward a second—or tenth—look. Together, they form a visual exploration of Roosevelt as rancher, soldier, naturalist, president, adventurer, and conservationist—and of the ideas that continue his legacy today.
